I wrote the whole of the first complex as a real inferno, using virtually nothing but nioses. These end on the lowest note of the violin, which is also the starting point for the profound shock. While the first section is headed sempre con fuoco e infernale the headings for the following section are misterioso e religioso followed by con calore in an attempt to come to terms with these terrible, dreadful events.
