Dvorák Antonín geb. in Mühlhausen an der Moldau (Nelahozeves), 8. September 1841, †Prag, 1. Mai 1904. An der Prager Orgelschule ausgebildet, spielte er zunächst als Bratschist in verschiedenen Orchestern, ehe er als Komponist Erfolge feierte. In den Jahren 1874 bis 1878 erhielt er über Vorschlag von Johannes Brahms ein Staatsstipendium. 1890 erfolgte an der Universität in Cambridge seine Promotion zum Dr.h. c., 1891 seine Wahl zum Mitglied der Tschechischen Akademie. 1892 bis 1895 lebte er als künstlerischer Leiter des National Conservatory of Music in New York. Zuammen mit B. Smetana zählt Dvorák zu den Begründern der nationalen tschechischen Schule in der Musik.
