The title Triptychon, usually a threepart altarpiece, refers to the structure of the work the three parts of which, images of different states of mind' (Tatjana Komarova), form a unified whole. Goya's etching The Sleep of Reason Produces Monsters was important to the inner atmosphere of the piece, without having simply been translated' into music.
One of Goya's darkly sinister works provided the young Russian composer with the inspiration for this triptych. Part 1 is for violoncello solo, part 2 for piano solo. Only part 3 involves both instruments.
