At first described as 'religious song' by Schumann, the motet 'Verzweifle nicht' could be heard with organ accompaniment for the first time on 4 July 1850 on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the University's choral society St. Pauli in Leipzig. He wrote the organ version specifically for this performance for he had originally planned an orchestral accompaniment. That, however, could only be completed later and was eventually premiered in 1853. In a letter to Schumann, Herrmann Langer, the conductor of both world premieres, mentioned 'the wonderful effect which the same has produced' and that, to him, 'the motet was one of the most stimulating and inspiring creations in male-voice literature'.

Décrit d'abord par Schumann comme "chant religieux", le motet "Verzweifle nicht" put être entendu pour la première fois avec accompagnement d'orgue le 4 juillet 1850 à l'occasion du 25e anniversaire de la société chorale de l'église St-Pauli de l'université de Leipzig. Il écrivit la version pour orgue pour cette circonstance bien qu'ayant prévu au départ un accompagnement d'orchestre qui ne fut complété que plus tard et dont la première eut lieu en 1853. Dans une lettre à Schumann, Hermann Langer, le chef des deux premières, mentionna "la remarquable impression que la même oeuvre avait produite" et que, pour lui, "le motet est une des créations les plus stimulantes et inspirantes de la littérature pour voix d'hommes".
