The New Robert Schumann Edition (RSA) is intended as a historico-critical edition of the collected works. They will be carefully studied and prepared according to present-day musicological and editorial techniques and presented in their entirety. Drafts, sketches and fragments, in short, everything that has come down to us as being authentically by Schumann and which, in most cases, has been deliberately preserved by him, will be brought together, evaluated as to its importance and documented in some form or other in the edition of the complete works.It is the aim of the edition to reproduce authentic texts which having corrected scribal, copying and printing errors and eradicated later additions and other textual corruptions will approach as closely as is possible the intention of the originals.The critical edition will form the basis of accurate performance material for Robert Schumanns work.

La Neue Robert Schumann-Ausgabe (RSA ; Nouvelle Édition Robert Schumann) a pour propos d'offrir une édition complète historico-critique. Mesurées à l'aune de l'état actuel de la technique éditoriale musicologique, les éditions complètes doivent être préparées soigneusement et se présenter comme un tout. Les premiers essais demeurés sous forme fragmentaires, les esquisses et autres projets, autrement dit tout ce qui a été authentiquement transmis et conservé de Schumann, dans la plupart des cas en pleine connaissance de sa part, est collecté, interrogé sur sa signification, et présenté sous une forme adaptée dans le cadre de l'édition complète. Le but de l'édition est la reproduction de textes authentiques qui - une fois purifiés des fautes d'écriture, de copie ou d'impression, nettoyés des ajouts postérieurs et/ou débarrassés d'éventuelles corruptions - doivent se rapprocher autant que possible de ce que prévoyaient les originaux. Et surtout, une édition critique doit, dans la pratique musicale, fournir une base solide à un travail particulièrement soigné dans sa fidélité à l'uvre de Robert Schumann.
