Traditional form meets modern melody: Raaf Hekkema's 'Suite' is based on the classical form of Bach's French dance suite with Prelude, Allemande, Courante, Saraband, Minuet, and Gigue. Hekkema gives each movement its own modern character: The Prelude is based on a free melody, like the tradition librement opening of a French suite for lute from the 17th century. In the Allemande, an improvisatory melody develops over an ostinato bass whereas the Courante is a fast, softly swinging movement. The Saraband with multiphonic chords resembles a thoughtful etude, and the Minuet plays with the complexity of three long musical eras. The final dance, the Gigue, turns out to be really 'funky'.

Rencontre de la tradition et de la mélodie contemporaine : la Suite de Raaf Hekkema s'oriente à la forme classique de la suite française dans le style de Bach : prélude, allemande, courante, sarabande, menuet et gigue. Hekkema ajoute à chacun de ces mouvements son propre caractère : le prélude repose sur une mélodie libre comme celles qui, au XVIIe siècle, constituaient l'introduction d'une suite française au luth. Il développe dans l'allemande une mélodie improvisée sur un ostinato, la courante est un mouvement à la fois rapide et doucement berceur. La sarabande, avec ses accords, fait penser à une étude rêveuse. Quant au menuet, il s'amuse avec la complexité multiphonique de ses périodes. Vraiment funky" , le dernier mouvement : la gigue!
