Sleeping Beauty Waltz - Dornröschen Walzer Piotr Ilich Tchaikowsky (Pyotr Peter Ilyich Iljitsch Tschaikovsky) / Arr. Plamen Kabaktschiev
In the letters of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, the subject of ballet holds a relatively modest place compared to, for instance, that of opera. Yet despite the brevity and restraint with which Tchaikovsky expressed his opinions about his ballets, these letters nevertheless reveal the composer's deep and genuine interest in his works from the perspective of their development.
Tchaikovsky's correspondence regarding The Sleeping Beauty allows us to trace every step of the ballet's creation in detail from orchestration and elaboration to rehearsals. He never missed an opportunity to praise the libretto by Vsevolozhsky. He clearly valued this contribution just as highly as that of Marius Petipa, referring to The Sleeping Beauty as our ballet. Working on this piece gave him a sense of inner peace something he had often missed while composing Swan Lake.
On July 25, 1889, he wrote to Nadezhda von Meck:
It seems to me, my dear friend, that the music for this ballet will become one of my finest works. The subject is so poetic, practically made for musical expression. As I absorbed it, I was carried away by the warmth and that yearning which always determines the value of a work
