Lately, the 'choir pope' Clytus Gottwald has increasingly arranged late Romantic repertoire pieces for a cappella choir. He said: 'The idea to make music from around the turn of the 19th to the 20th century accessible to choirs in transcriptions emerged from the understanding that choral a cappella music had been underdeveloped at that time.' In order to realise this idea, Gottwald focussed on pieces from Wagner, Mahler via Ravel, Debussy to Messiaen and Holliger. This arrangement is based on an original piano song by Paul Hindemith on a poem by Else Lasker-Schüler, and its soft and expressive sound makes it particularly suitable for a choral setting.

Ces derniers temps, le « pape » de la musique chorale Clytus Gottwald a accompli toujours plus d'arrangements de pièces du répertoire postromantique pour chur a cappella. Il dit : « L'idée de rendre accessible aux chorales, grâce à des transcriptions, la musique du tournant du XIXe au XXe siècle m'est venue lorsque j'ai constaté le peu de développement de la musique pour chur a cappella de cette époque ». Afin de réaliser cette intention, Gottwald s'est consacré aux uvres de Wagner, Mahler, Ravel, Debussy et aussi à celles de Messiaen et Holliger. La transcription présentée ici est, à l'origine, un lied avec piano de Paul Hindemith et se prête bien à une adaptation pour chur ; la musique en est à la fois douce et expressive.
