"What are the true qualities of a person? Outward beauty or inner values? Or perhaps a balance of the two?
This question has probably been posed by everyone at some time or another, and the answer is as challenging as it is subjective. This is also the theme of this work.
The poet and soldier Cyrano de Bergerac is known for his big nose and his great intellect. The 17th century novelist harbours feelings for the beautiful Roxane but is sure that this love will never be reciprocated. Roxane herself falls in love with the cadet Christian de Neuvillette, who is certainly handsome but could be described as stupid. Cyrano de Bergerac writes love poems on behalf of Christian to win Roxane's heart. And then there is the Count Guiche, who is married but also wants to make her is mistress.
Christian and Roxane eventually marry and the furious Count Guiche sends Christian and Cyrano, who serve together in the Captains of Gascony regiment, to the front and, some months later, on a suicide mission.
Shortly before the battle, Roxane confesses to her husband that she no longer loves him so much for his beauty as for his inner values. Christian is dismayed and begs Cyrano to tell Roxane the truth, but he can't bring himself to do so.
Christian de Neuvillette dies in battle and Cyrano de Bergerac remains silent about the true provenance of the letters.
Only much later does the truth come to light: scarred by the war, Cyrano visits Roxane in the convent where she has been living since Christian's death and confesses his love for her. He ultimately dies in Roxane's arms.

Tout le monde s'est probablement déjà posé cette question et la réponse est aussi difficile que subjective. C'est aussi le thème de la présente uvre.
Le poète et soldat Cyrano de Bergerac est connu pour son grand nez et sa grande intelligence. Le personnage fictif du XVIIe siècle nourrit des sentiments pour la belle Roxane, mais est certain que cet amour ne sera jamais rendu.
Roxane tombe amoureuse du cadet Christian de Neuvillette, décrit comme beau mais plutôt stupide. Cyrano de Bergerac écrit des poèmes d'amour au nom de Christian pour gagner les faveurs de Roxane. Mais il y a aussi le comte de Guiche marié qui veut aussi en faire sa maîtresse.
Christian et Roxane finissent par se marier et le comte de Guiche, furieux, envoie Christian et Cyrano (qui servent ensemble dans le régiment des cadets de Gascogne) au front et de là, après plusieurs mois, en mission suicide.
Juste avant la bataille, Roxane avoue à son mari qu'elle ne l'aime plus pour sa beauté mais pour ses valeurs humaines. Christian est effaré et dit à Cyrano de dire la vérité à Roxane, mais Cyrano n'a pas le cur à cela. Christian de Neuvillette meurt au combat et Cyrano de Bergerac reste silencieux sur la véritable paternité des lettres.
Ce n'est que bien plus tard que la vérité éclate : marqué par la guerre, Cyrano rend visite à Roxane au monastère, où elle vit depuis la mort de Christian, et lui avoue son amour. Il meurt finalement dans les bras de Roxane."

"Welke zijn de ware kwaliteiten in een mens? Uiterlijke vertoon of innerlijke schoonheid? Of iets tussen de twee in?
Deze vraag stelt eenieder zich van tijd tot tijd. En het antwoord is zowel een persoonlijk als een heel subjectief vraagstuk. Het is tevens het thema achter deze compositie.
De soldaat-dichter Cyrano de Bergerac is gekend voor zijn grote neus en zijn groot intellect. De 17e-eeuwse schrijver koestert gevoelens voor de beeldschone Roxanne maar hij is er van overtuigd dat dit niet wederzijds is. Roxanne wordt verliefd op de cadet Christian de Neuvillette, een man met de looks' maar verder zonder inhoud. Cyrano de Bergerac schrijft liefdesgedichten in naam van Christian om Roxanne's hart te winnen. En dan is er ook nog Graaf Guiche die getrouwd is maar van Roxanne zijn minnares wil maken.
Christian en Roxanne trouwen uiteindelijk en de furieuze Graaf Guiche zendt Christian en Cyrano, die samen dienen in het regiment van de Kapitein van Gascogne, naar het front en zendt hen enkele maanden later op een zelfmoordmissie.
Niet lang voor de veldslag biechtte Roxanne aan haar echtgenoot op dat ze niet langer van hem houdt voor zijn schoonheid, noch voor zijn innerlijke waarden. Christian is ontzet en smeekt Cyrano om Roxanne de waarheid te vertellen, maar lukt hier niet in.
Christian de Neuvillette sterft in een gevecht en Cyrano de Bergerac verzwijgt de ware afkomst van de brieven.
Pas veel later komt de waarheid aan het licht; getekend door de oorlog bezoekt Cyrano Roxanne in het klooster waar ze leefde sinds de dood van Christian en bekent zijn liefde voor haar. Hij sterft uiteindelijk in de armen van Roxanne.
