'Kai' was written in memory of Kai Scheffler, principal cellist and a key member of the Ensemble Modern in Germany, who died tragically young in 1989. The 18 minute work is in four continuous movements and leads the performers from an aggressive opening through many contrasting sections, often distinctly jazz influenced, to a slow final requiem. The solo part is almost exclusively lyrical, stretching out long, mournful lines over an accompaniment which, in contrast, can be abrupt and claustrophobic. This is a challenging and fantastically rewarding work which has established itself in the core of the contemporary cello repertoire.

"Kai" a été écrit à la mémoire de Kai Scheffler, premier violoncelliste et membre central de l'Ensemble Modern en Allemagne, après sa mort tragique et prématurée en 1989. Cette oeuvre de 18 minutes se compose de quatre mouvements continus. Les instrumentistes sont amenés d'un début abrupt et à travers de nombreux passages contrastés, souvent clairement influencés par le jazz, à un lent requiem final. La partie soliste est presque exclusivement lyrique, elle tend ses longues lignes mélancoliques au-dessus d'un accompagnement parfois agressif et claustrophobique. C'est une pièce ambitieuse et on ne peut plus accomplie qui s'est établie au coeur du répertoire contemporain pour violoncelle.
