The term spheres (plural) was based on the geocentric idea that the celestial vault consists of concentric transparent crystalline spherical shells at different distances, which rotate differently and are attached to the stars. The work Spheres' attempts to describe this musically. At the beginning, a powerful fanfare describes the earth (the earth's shell). This is followed, after a stirring transition, by a description of the emptiness of the individual spheres. Bar by bar, a pulse and a melody emerge from the sound surface, according to Pythagoras' theory that the rotating spheres create a heavenly music. The structure ends in a brilliant allegro, which symbolises that the spheres, although each one is independent, form a unity in the entire universe. The work was dedicated by the Jugendmusik Ostermundigen to the company Ziswiler Recycling AG as a thank you for their extremely generous financial support.
