Every summer, Chichester Cathedral in Sussex, England and its neighbours from Winchester and Salisbury mobilise all their energies to lift one of Britain's most important Church Music festivals (Southern Cathedral's Festival). For the festival in 1965, Leonard Bernstein was commissioned with a composition - the occasion for the now very popular Chichester Psalms. The three-part work is based on Hebrew Psalms, the amber itself put together and underline its liturgical character. Bernstein was released from his duties with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra for a sabbatical year in the year of the Chichester Psalms, and used this opportunity to compose. He reports: "At that time I wrote only twelve-tone music and even more experimental stuff almost the whole year. I was happy to be able to bring out these new sounds; but after about six months of work, I threw everything away. That was not my music; it was not sincere. And as a result, the Chichester Psalms were born - surely the most catchy B flat major tonal piece I've ever written. "

Chaque été, la cathédrale de Chichester dans le Sussex mobilise ses voisines de Winchester et de Salisbury pour l'un des plus grands festivals de musique religieuse de Grande-Bretagne : le Southern Cathedral's Festival. Pour l'édition de 1965, on a commandé une composition à Leonard Bernstein - les Chichester Psalms, devenus très populaires entretemps. Cette uvre en trois parties se base sur des psaumes hébraïques, que Bernstein a réuni lui-même pour en souligner le caractère liturgique. L'année de la création des Chichester Psalms, Bernstein était en congé sabbatique d'un an de son poste au New York Philharmonic Orchestra, une occasion qu'il a utilisée pour composer. Il raconte : « À l'époque, je n'ai composé pendant un an quasiment que de la dodécaphonie, et des choses encore plus expérimentales. J'étais heureux de faire émerger ces nouvelles sonorités ; mais après environ six mois de travail, j'ai tout jeté. Ce n'était pas ma musique, ce n'était pas sincère. Ensuite, il y a eu les Chichester Psalms - certainement la pièce tonale en si majeur la plus claire que j'aie jamais composé ».
