In his choice of the title La Follia, Krzysztof Penderecki recalls the tradition of virtuosic variations on a Sarabande originating from the Baroque period. The theme is introduced first in pizzicato, then arco, and is developed in nine variations which exploit the full range of playing techniques on the violin. The breakneck speed of double stopping passages, artificial harmonics, extensive melodic arcs, sparkling arpeggios over all four strings, flying spiccato, and broken chords above the ostinato theme make high musical and technical demands on the performer.
Mit der Wahl des Titels La Follia stellt Krzysztof Penderecki sich in die seit der Barockzeit wirkende Tradition der kunstvoll-virtuosen Variation eines Sarabanden-Themas. Neunmal verarbeitet er das Motiv, dabei alle spieltechnischen Möglichkeiten der Geige einsetzend.

En prenant pour titre "La Follia", Krzysztof Penderecki se place dans la tradition vivante remontant à l'époque baroque de la variation artistiquement virtuose d'un thème de sarabande. Il en livre neuf arrangements, présentant le motif d'abord pizzicato puis arco, et mettant en uvre toutes les possibilités du violon. Passages rapides en doubles cordes, harmoniques artificielles, longues mélodies dans l'archet, arpèges perlés sur les quatre cordes, spiccati volants et accords arpégés sur un thème obstiné exigent les plus hautes capacités musicales et techniques de la part de l'interprète.
