As a clarinetist frequently performing with string quartets, the clarinet quintet is a strange omission from Jörg Widmann's catalogue of works. Up until now, his quintet programmes have included works primarily by Mozart, Brahms, Weber, and in slightly altered or extended instrumentation Messiaen's Quatuor pour la fin du temps, alongside Widmann's own sextet Fieberfantasie. This gap in his oeuvre is now finally filled with his first Clarinet Quintet which is sure to become a regular part of chamber music repertoire in the future.
