The song became popular in 1966 with Cannonball Adderleys band, where the composer Joe (Josef) Zawinul played the piano. Joe Zawinul (1932-2007) was an austrian pianist/keyboardist/composer. His mother was a gypsy and he emigrated to the US late in the fifties. As a pianist he was one of the first to start using synthesizers and electric instruments. His composing has given us well known songs like "Birdland", and has made Jazz music more popular to a wider audience.

Joe Zawinul (1932-2007) var en østerriksk pianist/keybordist. Zawinuls mor var sigøyner, og han emigrerte til USA sent på 50-tallet. Som pianist var han en innovatør bl.a. i forhold til bruken av synther og elektriske instrumenter. Hans virke som komponist har bl.a. gitt oss kjente låter som f.eks. "Birdland", og har gjort at jazzen har nådd et langt bredere publikum.
