Ring Around the Moon ist eine in jeder Hinsicht ungewöhnliche Komposition, die Partchs satirische und ernsthafte Absichten ineinander vermischt und absurde, unsinnige Einwürfe der Sprechstimme intensiven und komplizierten Harmoniesequenzen gegenüberstellt. Obwohl Partch dieses Stück erst 1952 beendete, arbeitete er schon seit 1949 daran, wobei er jeweils verschiedene Titel benutzte. Zur ersten Fassung Tonality Flux sind keine Entwürfe überliefert; die zweite Fassung unter dem Titel Sonata Dementia wurde 1951 eingespielt.

Ring Around the Moon est une composition inhabituelle à tout point de vue, qui brasse les propos satiriques et sérieux de Partch et confronte les remarques absurdes et insensées des voix à des séquences harmoniques intenses et complexes. Bien que Partch ait achevé la pièce en 1952, il y travaillait déjà depuis 1949, en lui donnant des noms différents. Lors de la première version du tonality flux, aucun brouillon ne fut transmis : la deuxième version, baptisée Sonata Dementia, fut jouée en 1951.
