1941 komponierte Harry Partch die erste Fassung von Barstow, die originale Besetzung bestand aus Singstimme und Adapted Guitar. In den Folgejahren revidierte Partsch das Stück mehrere Male, bis 1968 die endgültige Fassung vorlag. Er selbst hatte die Texte 1940 gesammelt, indem er Beschriftungen auf Straßengeländern im kalifornischen Barstow abschrieb.

En 1941, Harry Partch compose la première version de Barstow : la version originale se compose d'une voix et d'une guitare adaptée. Les années suivantes, Partch révise la pièce de nombreuses fois, avant de présenter la version finale en 1968. Il avait collecté les textes lui-même en 1940, en compilant des inscriptions sur les rampes de sécurité à Barstow en Californie.
