Harry Partch met soprano Ethel Luening in 1942 and two years later composed this work for her. Initial performances featured Luening as soprano with Partch playing his kithara, and composer Henry Brant playing double flageolet; Partch would eventually replace the double flageolet with two flutes. The use of the complex text from James Joyce's Finnegan's Wake contrasts strongly with Partch's other works at the time, which used texts from Partch's experiences as a transient or from authors like Thomas Wolfe.

Harry Partch rencontre la soprano Ethel Luening en 1942 et compose cette uvre pour elle deux ans plus tard. Au cours des premières représentations avec elle comme soliste, Partch jouait de sa cithare et le compositeur Henry Brant du « doppelflageolett » (un instrument original). Plus tard, Partch remplace cet instrument par deux flûtes traversières. L'utilisation du texte complexe de Finnegan's Wake de James Joyce contraste assez brutalement avec les autres uvres de Partch de l'époque, qui contiennent des textes des expériences du compositeur comme voyageur ou d'auteurs comme Thomas Wolfe.
