Fast drei Jahre lang komponierte Partch an den kurzen Stücken, die er in der Sammlung Seventeen Poems by Li Po zusammenfasste. Jedes von ihnen stellt die Vertonung eines Gedichts des chinesischen Dichters Li Bai (Li Po, 701-762) in der Übersetzung von Shigeyoshi Obata aus dem Jahr 1922 dar. Partch schrieb diese Liedersammlung für Singstimme und seine neu konstruierte Adapted Viola. In seiner Partitur hatte Partch die Lieder ursprünglich in Eleven Poems by Li Po und Six Poems by Li Po unterteilt.

Pendant presque trois ans, Partch a composé de courtes pièces tirées de Seventeen Poems de Li Po. Chacune d'entre elles est une mise en musique d'un poème du poète chinois Li Bai (Li Po, 701-762), d'après la traduction de Shigeyoshi Obata de 1922. Partch a écrit ce recueil de chansons pour voix et sa nouvelle Adapted Viola. Dans sa partition, Partch avait originellement partagé les chansons en Eleven Poems by Li Po et Six Poems by Li Po.
