In 1950, Harry Partch completed his eleven-part collection, setting to music texts by his literary contemporaries, including Ella Young, Willard Motley, George Leite and Giuseppe Ungaretti, as well as old writings by Ki No Tsurayuki and Lao-Tse. His intention was that every word should be heard and understood clearly; he supports the text with evocative passages of the instruments many of which had only recently been built by him.
