Vorliegende Ricercari gehören zu den zweifelhaften Werken Palestrinas, von denen kein Originaldruck oder Autograph bekannt ist. Haberl hat sie in den 32. Band der Gesamtausgabe der Werke Palestrinas (S. 80 ff.) aus einer im Nachlass Bainis befindlichen Abschrift G. Chitis aufgenommen. Sie sind streng motettisch komponiert, d.h. sie führen einzelne Themen (3-5) abschnittsweise durch. Die Reihenfolge der Ricercari entspricht der Ordnung der acht Kirchentonarten: Dorisch, Hypodorisch, Phrygisch, Hypophrigisch, Lydisch, Hypolydisch, Mixolydisch, Hypomixolydisch. Zur Aufführung eignen sich Streich- und Blasinstrumente (auch gemischt) ebensogut wie ein Tasteninstrument. Als Tempo ist ein mittleres Zeitmaß (Andante) zu wählen. Dem Brauche des 16. Jahrhunderts entsprechend sind Diminutionen (Koloraturen) möglich, vor allem, wenn eine mehrfache Besetzung der Einzelstimme vorliegt, bei der ein Instrument an der "res facta" (geschriebene Melodie) festhält.

Les présents Ricercari font parti des oeuvres attribuées à Palestrine dont on ne connaît aucun autographe ni aucune édition originale. Haberl en a trouvé une copie de G. Chiti dans les papiers laissés par Baini et les a incorporés aus Tome 32 de son édition complète des oeuvresde Palestrina (p. 80 et suiv.). Les Ricercari sont composés à la manière des motets de style rigoureux, c'est-à-dire qu'ils développent les thèmes (3-5) un à un par périodes. L'ordre des Ricercari suit celui des huit tons d'église: dorien, hypodorien, phrygien, hypophrygien, lydien, hypolydien, mixolydien, hypommixolydien. L'exécution peut en être confiée aussi bien à des instruments à clavier qu'a des instruments à cordes ou à des instrumetns à vent. Le mouvement correspond à une vitesse moyenne (Andante). Conformément à l'usage du XVIe siècle, les diminutions (fioritures) sont possibles, surtout quand la partie est exécutée par plusieurs voix et qu'un instrument continue à jouer la mélodie écrite (res facta).
