The piece can be performed either with the choir or solely with the band. In the set of parts, 10 choir parts are included.

The opera, composed and completed at the end of 1903, had its premiere in 1904 at La Scala in Milan, where it was a resounding failure. However, from the second performance onward, it became a triumphant success, and the opera entered the repertoire of theaters worldwide.
