The five short miniatures for two singers and five instruments were commissioned by the Miller Theatre at Columbia University in New York in 2014. The performers of the world premiere were the baritone singer Jeffrey Gavett and the countertenor Kai Wessel. Originally composed for countertenor and low alto voice, Five Action Sketches can also be performed by other voices.

Commandées par le Miller Theatre de l'Université de Columbia à New York, ces cinq brèves miniatures pour deux chanteurs et cinq instruments furent composées en 2014. Les interprètes à la première étaient le baryton Jeffrey Gavett et le haute-contre Kai Wessel. Composées à l'origine pour haute-contre et alto « profond », Five action sketches peut aussi être exécuté par d´autres voix.
