Bertold Hummel's a-cappella choral music was mainly written for being used in services. The missa 'Cantabo Domino' was composed in 1958 for the liturgical festival of a Catholic student community in Freiburg im Breisgau. The piece can be performed by an amateur choir without great effort. Of modern harmony, the mass is exemplarily short and concise, with the comprehensibility of the text being to the fore. Hummel deliberately adjusted the melodic phrasing to the Gregorian chants to form a stylistic unity. This 'utility music' in the best sense of the word is ideal for any choir!

La messe "Cantabo Domino" a été composée en 1958 pour le festival liturgique d'une communauté d'étudiants catholiques à Fribourg-en-Brisgau. La pièce peut être chantée sans difficulté particulière par un choeur amateur. Avec son harmonie contemporaine, la messe est remarquablement courte et concise tout en mettant la compréhension du texte au premier plan. Hummel en a délibérément ajusté l'expression mélodique aux chants grégoriens du Propre et formé ainsi une unité stylistique. Cette "musique utilitaire", au meilleur sens du terme, convient à tous les choeurs.
