Music is a universal means of communication. It is both a cross-culture and identity-forming genre, for small groups and entire nations. This applies particularly to the national anthem. As a 'musical national symbol' beside the flag and coat of arms, it represents the sovereignty of a country. No wonder that national anthems play an outstanding role at international meetings and are sung or played not only at state receptions but also at major sporting events.
