Nach Studien am Royal College of Music in London gehörte er als Trompeter verschiedenen philharmonischen Orchestern an. 1951 gründete er das "Philip Jones Brass Ensemble", das er bis 1986 leitete und mit dem er vorbildhaft Musik für Bläser Ensembles interpretierte. Seit 1975 unterrichtete er am Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, seit 1983 an der Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London.
