Er hat Abschlüsse von der University of Toronto (Kanada), der University of Miami (FL) und der Michigan State University und ist derzeit Professor für Musik an der St. Bonaventure University im Bundesstaat New York. Er erhielt Stipendien und Auszeichnungen vom Canada Council, der International Association of Jazz Educators, ASCAP und der Performing Rights Organization of Canada, die ihn 1988 zum Jazzkomponisten des Jahres ernannte.
