Daneben setzte sich Mendelssohn Bartholdy für die Aufführung von Werken Händels und Johann Sebastian Bachs ein. Damit trug er wesentlich zu ihrer Wiederentdeckung und zur Herausbildung eines Verständnisses für die klassische Epoche der deutschen Musik bei. Er gilt als Mitbegründer der historischen Musikpflege und gründete das erste Konservatorium in Deutschland.
