Er studierte an der Baylor University, wo er 1988 mit dem Bachelor of Music Education abschloß, sowie an der University of Michigan; 1990 Master of Music, 1993 Doctor of Musical Arts. Als Träger wertvoller Kompositionspreise unterrichtete er u. a. am Interlochen Center of the Arts und an der University of Wisconsin.
