Der Trauermarsch für eine Marionette entstand 1872 als Teil von Charles Gounods Suite Burlesque pour Piano. Die Suite war als Parodie auf den Musikkritiker Henry Chorley gedacht. Vom ganzen Werk hat Gounod lediglich diesen Trauermarsch behalten. Er wurde unzählige Male aufgenommen, zum ersten Mal übrigens von John Philip Sousa. Seine größte Popularität dürfte das Stück als Titelmusik der TV-Serie Alfred Hitchcock präsentiert erlangt haben, die in den sechziger Jahren in der ARD lief.
